Autism Screening

There is no medical or blood test to diagnose autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Instead, healthcare professionals review a person’s developmental history, behavior, and observations from family, using specialized screening and diagnostic tools.

If you suspect signs of autism, you can complete a screening tool like the M-CHAT-R for young children and bring a copy of the results to your pediatrician. A positive result is not a diagnosis, but it can help prompt a thorough evaluation. Early screening can improve access to services and supports, which can positively impact future outcomes.

Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised (M-CHAT-R)

For ages 16 to 30 months

The M-CHAT-R is a free parent-completed questionnaire that will ask a series of 20 questions about your child’s behavior. You can use the results of the screener to discuss any concerns that you may have with your child’s healthcare provider. Take the 2-minute screening questionnaire.
